Impact of smartphone use at bedtime on sleep quality and academic activities among medical students at Al -Azhar University at Cairo

Abstract Aim Smartphone use has become prevalent and rapidly expanding. Therefore, it is essential to determine the potential adverse effects. This study aims assess prevalence of smartphone at bedtime its association with sleep quality educational-related activities among medical students. Subject methods The current cross-sectional included 1184 male female undergraduate students Al-Azhar University in Cairo. We used a self-administered questionnaire collect data on personal characteristics, use, academic activities. Pittsburgh index ((PSQI) was for assessment quality. Results result revealed that highly (96.5 %), nearly half (46.9%) studied using them more than 2 hours. Social media top usage list (74.2%), followed by communication (48.8%). users had significantly higher poor quality, increased latency, difficulty maintaining sleep, shorter duration compared non-user (p-value<0.05). probability regular coffee drinking, hostel residence, proximity phone during whereas likelihood decreased physical activity.
